Chapter 01
Kinetic energy becomes heat, and heat wears the pad
A rolling car carries kinetic energy, and stopping it means getting rid of that energy somewhere. Brakes do it through friction: the pad presses against the rotor, or the shoe against the drum, and that friction converts the car's motion into heat. The pad material is what absorbs that punishment, a little more with every stop.
That wear is expected and gradual by design. The real job is catching it before the pad material is gone, not being surprised that it wears at all.

Grinding means you are already past the pad
Most pads have a built-in wear indicator that starts squealing once the friction material gets thin, a deliberate early warning. Grinding is a different, later sound. It means the pad material is gone and metal is contacting metal, which usually means the rotor or drum is getting damaged in the process too, turning a pad job into a bigger one.
A brake fluid checkup can catch problems even earlier than the squeal, since fluid condition and brake feel often shift before a pad is visibly thin. When you hear grinding, it is time for service, and by then the job has grown past just the pads.
Chapter 03
Disc, drum and ABS, what each one actually needs
Disc brakes use a pad clamping onto an exposed rotor, which sheds heat well and is the common setup on the front of most vehicles today. Drum brakes use shoes pressing outward inside an enclosed drum, usually on the rear, with a self-adjusting mechanism that works differently from a disc setup and needs its own kind of attention. We handle disc and drum repairs and replacements as the separate jobs they actually are.
ABS is a different system again. An ABS light on the dash means the anti-lock system that keeps the wheels from locking up under hard braking is not functioning correctly, and that calls for its own diagnostic path involving the wheel speed sensors and the ABS module rather than a straightforward pad and rotor job.
